Finding Your Calling: A Path You Shape, Not Something You “Get”

There are days when you watch a film or scroll past someone's story about the moment everything clicked — the calling they found, the path that finally made sense — and something in you quietly contracts.

You know those stories are polished. You know they leave out the years of uncertainty, the detours, the doubt. And yet another part of you still wonders: why don't I have that?

That wondering is worth paying attention to. Not because it means something is wrong with you — but because it points to something real. A longing for work and life that feels genuinely, deeply yours.

The Myth of the Lightning Bolt

We've inherited a particular story about callings — that they arrive fully formed, like a revelation. That somewhere out there is the one right path, waiting to be discovered. That the people who seem most alive in their work simply found theirs, and you just haven't found yours yet.

But that story creates more suffering than clarity.

Because if a calling is something you receive — a lightning bolt, a sign, a moment of sudden knowing — then the absence of it starts to feel like failure. Like you're somehow missing the frequency everyone else is tuned into.

Here's what I've come to believe, both personally and through my work: a calling isn't something you find. It's something you shape.

It emerges slowly, through curiosity and attention. Through noticing what energizes you and what quietly drains you. Through following threads that interest you even when they don't yet make sense as a whole. Through living, trying, failing, and adjusting — not through waiting for permission to begin.

You're Not Indecisive — You're Integrative

Maybe you're the person sitting at your desk thinking: I wish I had just one clear direction. You feel pulled toward several things at once, and somewhere along the way you started to read that as a problem. As inconsistency. As proof that you haven't figured yourself out yet.

But look closer.

The person pulled in multiple directions isn't scattered — they're someone with the capacity to connect dots that others can't. To bring together threads that don't usually belong in the same room. To create something that only their particular combination of interests, experiences, and perspectives could produce.

You're not indecisive. You're integrative.

And that's not something to fix. It's the very thing that makes your path uniquely yours.

Your path doesn't have to be linear to be intentional.

From Comparison to Self-Trust

The comparison trap is real — and it's worth naming what's actually happening when we fall into it.

When we measure our path against someone else's, we're not really comparing careers or achievements. We're measuring our internal experience — messy, uncertain, still unfolding — against someone else's external presentation. That's not a fair fight, and it was never meant to be one.

The shift that matters isn't finding the right path. It's releasing the idea that your path should look like anyone else's at all.

Your journey has its own rhythm, its own timing, its own texture. Recognizing that — really recognizing it, not just intellectually but in the body, in the way you make decisions — is already a profound transition. From pressure to possibility. From forcing to aligning.

Shaping Your Path — Step by Step

A calling isn't a destination you arrive at. It's something that reveals itself through movement — through discovery, awareness, and the willingness to explore without needing to know the end point in advance.

Maybe you once felt drawn to something that life made impossible. The question then isn't why didn't I get that? It's what was alive in me then, and how can I honor it now, within the life I actually have?

That question — asked with curiosity rather than pressure — is where paths begin to open.

Not all at once. Not with a lightning bolt. But step by step, in your own way, on your own terms.
